Lawyers for three former parliamentarians in Nsanje and Chikwawa districts are yet to decide whether or not to appeal a ruling by Blantyre High Court which has nullified results for the 2019 Parliamentary elections in three constituencies.
Dalitso Mataka who is lead counsel representing former parliamentarian for Nsanje North Esther Mcheka Chilenje, Chikwawa East Sam Khumbanyiwa and Francis Kasaila for Nsanje Central constituencies said he will make his stand after going through the judgment sheet.
According to Mataka he also has to consult his clients on the way forward before making a final decision.
“I have to read the judgement first and then map the way forward,” he said.
Three Malawi Congress party-MCP parliamentary candidates Kafandikhale Mandevana who contested for Nsanje Central, Enoch Chizuzu of Nsanje north and Foster Thipiwa who contested for Chikwawa East were challenging in court results of the parliamentary elections in the three constituencies claiming they were marred by gross irregularities.
Meanwhile Malawi Electoral Commission-MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa told Rainbow that the commission will respect the ruling and will soon meet to map the way forward on when to hold by-elections in all vacant wards and constituencies.
“We will respect the ruling and will map the way forward,” Mwafulirwa stated.
On Thursday High Court Judge Justice Sylvester Kalembera nullified results of the 2019 parliamentary election on in the three constituencies and ordered fresh elections within sixty days.
