Uncertainty on Nankhumwa, Chakwera meet

Must read

It remains unclear when President Lazarus Chakwera and Leadership of Opposition, Kondwani Nankhumwa will begin meeting following the former’s pledge to engage the opposition leader every three months to discuss matters of national interest.

Nankhumwa has told Rainbow that Chakwera has not shown commitment to engage his office and can only wait when he opens up for such.

“I know the president has a lot on his table. But for now, I can confirm there is no communication and modalities in place on how the meetings will be handled,” says Nankhumwa.

During his inauguration in July 2020, Chakwera received praises when he pledged to be going to parliament to answer questions and meeting Leader of Opposition every three months.

He has so far been to parliament twice; a move widely viewed as progressive in attaining a transparent and accountable leadership.

But Chakwera’s silence on his meetings with Nankhumwa have raised more questions than answers as Livingstonia University Lecturer, George Phiri argues its high time the Malawi leader walked his talk on the matter.

“Chakwera remains accountable to the people with all the campaign promises he made. Meeting Leader of Opposition is significant in sharing notes that can shape the country’s direction and priorities,” said Phiri.

But Presidential spokesperson, Brian Banda says Chakwera is committed to fulfilling the pledge on engaging Leader of Opposition.

“He will surely meet the Leader of Opposition. The President made the promise and I know at an appropriate, he will do as pledged,” says Banda, who falls short of specifying when such will begin.

Previously, there has been a mouse and cat chase between government and the opposition and Chakwera’s promise gave hope and confidence of a new direction the country was taking in dealing with critical matters of national interest.
